DRESSING up my kitchen and LUCY and ETHEL...

Sometimes change is exactly what one needs to open the gates of creativity.  We were away from technology most days and it turned out to be exhilarating. It was exhausting too as so much had to be done but in the last hours of my day,  I would sit and listen to some classics and stitch away.

I had some dish towels with me, I brought along a small bag of fabrics, just enough for these projects. And they turned out better than my mind had designed. Love that when that happens.

There is no doubt in my mind, that Paper Ladies are always on my mind and creating pretty lady dresses with ruffles just seems to flow....

Here is one that was a gift dish towel that was so large I actually
made duplicates ....they will make perfect birthday gifts..

Her waist has a lovely accent of a thin black bias tape and polka dot ruffles along
with berry buttons from Shellys Buttons and More...
her bodice a stone wash cotton...

She is so CLASSIC!

And then I had these great turquoise towels....also with a gingham ruffle
and lady bug buttons..OH MY ... yes from Shelly once again...
They have the most unusual buttons...

1 T-Towel made 2 dresses...love when that happens...
I added some bow lace at the gathering waist....so pretty indeed...
The extra will be a gift too!

I only need 1 of each... so it is good to share the duplicates.

And then it was onto this navy blue dish dress with phone material ruffle,
some matching piping under the white dots on dots bodice
and telephone buttons again from Shellys Buttons and More....
Made 2 of these too!

So nice to be home and have them on my stove...
and these can be used...they wash up like a dream...

( and yes ladies, pattern is coming....I am working on 2 designs so they will be ready
a week from now.... there will be kits as well - Dish towels that will make 2 of these
and buttons to match)
Let us know your preference...!

And then it was time to design some dresses for Lucy and Ethel...
I picked up this fabric in pink quite awhile ago and kept
thinking of what to do with it when it struck me..
LUCY ( another Lucy doll I have) well she looks perfect in this...
PINK suits her with that red hair..

Now this Lucy and Ethel needed new outfits too and I just happen to have
this fabric in yellow and blue and red ( below) with telephones..
Perfect for the real Ethel in my life, as we spend so much time on the phone...

These dresses are made 85% by hand....and I love stitching them...
they are lined in gingham... and with telephone buttons for their belts...

Ethel   Lucy will be heading to her new home soon- soon as I complete
her wee banner...wink...
( she wants Lucy in Yellow) so Ethel will stay behind with the other Lucy's...lol)

I will be keeping Ethel and Lucy in the yellow ensemble =
she will  be missed....

I made a RED dress for Grace...another doll that needed
a new look, and she looks so pretty in red...
They will keep each other company for a bit...

So this is what this lady has been up to...amazing how much one can get done when she is not
popping in and out of technology...

But frankly speaking, missed YOU too.... Glad to be HOME!

  6. Hi Samm.....so glad you are home, and even though it was a working vacation, you did manage to live without all the technology we have become used to. A I look back on the 40's and 50's, I think we accomplished more and spent more time with our children and did more as a family, than we do now. Not that I don't love all the technological advances we now have, it does have it's disadvantages.

Those Dish Dresses are fabulous, such a great idea and so many possibilities. Love the crocheting on the edge of the first one. Some years back, I did that on some receiving blankets and they looked so pretty, but as the GG kept coming along, I got lazy and didn't do that anymore. Hugs to you both and the Riot Boys.

    1. HI Sylvia...yes I coud hardly believe what I accomplished with also feeding a crew morning new and night...there was no relaxing until the sun said goodnight...there is something about that time, as exhausting as it was, I reminded me of days when technology was not even a twinkle in the sky...HOWEVER if not for it today, how would we connect like we do....lol...and yes the crochet was a gorgeous touch however Cori whipped that up with ease..for me...wellllllll let's just say I am still trying to perfect that... to a lovely week..

    1. Hellllllo Sandra...and I bet you did them fabulously...I swear though it takes me more time to do a mini dress than one for myself...much more hand sewing and they are all lined pieces...with small snaps that have to be hand sewn...gosh I love little girls real and make believe lol.. and the tea towel dresses..well that is just one design..wait till you see what I have next to show lol

  14. Your towel dresses are the most beautiful I have ever seen Samm. I agree with Evelyn, you make practical beautiful. It is hard to pick a favorite, each one is so pretty. You know how to turn a house into a HOME... and speaking of home, I am so glad you are home! Your hand stitching on those tiny clothes looks impeccable. All of those little seams, and do I see lining? Holy moley... you are good. The telephone fabric is perfect for YOUR Lucy and Ethel... two of the sweetest friends. It is harder to pick a favorite from those. You know I am partial to blue... but Lucy has always been a ray of sunshine, and how perfect she is in yellow. You inspire me with your talent Samm as I sit here stitching on a tiny dress of my own. I wish I was as good at it as you...but I have a ways to go...lol. Maybe I need a lesson, are you available this week? I'll be over. *wink. xx

    1. Good Morning Cori...well it came down to this, I have these really pretty towels but some were so large and not being used...making them into dish dresses makes them practical and useful and yes pretty lol. And making doll clothes, yes lined..wellllll I just enjoy the mini part of it most of all..to think one fat quarter of fabric can create a dress...imagine that, and so much better made than what they come with..so yes someday I will teach you the minis and you teach me the crochet edges lol...

  17. I love the telephone outfits, especially that mini b & w gingham collar, waist and phone button! I believe I have the same two fabrics. Mine goes with the Norman Rockwell fabric "Chain of Gossip"-such a fun line. One fabric has a lot of people talking to one another on the phone. I collect phone fabric and embroidery designs. I bought your Sleep Over but still have to finish the Lady rolling out apples on my apron first. I started as a cordboard operator in 1977 and worked for the phone company for 32 years. I still have to think of a design for all the telephone fabric I bought and I would like a tote out of some of it.

  18. So original to make dress towels, I've never seen such thing before. We spent our holiday also without TV or Wifi and it was a good experience. There is much more time to talk, reed and craft. We'll do it again next holiday. Are the boys pleased to be home again? Greets, Nienke

  19. It never hurts us to be away from 'technology' - I love it when we travel, we don't take computers with us and the tv is rarely on. He reads, I sew or read. Quality time.
    Love your sweet creation!
