IN the life of summertime gardeners and robin and feline keepers..

A lot has happened in a few days....we spent 4 full days labouring as Gardeners...
Listen, this is no job for the faint of heart....this is a very tough job...
both of our bodies have been trying to recover lol

David and I worked as a team, I laid low to the ground digging up
weeds, I also removed all the old mulch....( last year we thought we purchased
cedar, turned out to be coloured wood chips which did not stop the weeds)
This year we got real cedar....hopefully that will help in 5 hours weeding...

That was the first day...We ordered 2 yards of triple mix to add to the 7 gardens
and the same in cedar mulch..David's task was wheeling all that from the front
yard to the back...I spread it all out and planted new white plants..

We dug up an old cedar tree that was dying..hate doing that...
here is the before and after of this front garden...

When we first built our home we had a landscaper design our garden, but so much of what they planted has outgrown their space...so we removed the cedar tree, and a pompom bush...all that is left now is a flowering bush on your left, some ivy in the back, daisies ( that will be the whole patch there in the center and fire bushes on your right...)  Looks much better now...in the center of our property, we planted a new flowering pear tree last summer...it is fairing well.  So that garden took us all day...

I woke up early on day 2 ( that was Saturday) and made a couple butterscotch ( my fav) chocolate for David ( his fav) figured with all the gardening we were doing, a few pies..( note these are only 6 inch pies) enough for 2 servings per pie)   Both these recipes are so simple...Basic ingredients...

2 cups of milk, 2 tablespoons of corn starch, 2 egg yolks ( whites for meringue) 1 cup of brown sugar for one, the other 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips....that is it... I don't think there is anything as good as something that comes from the heart and home...maybe that is why David thinks everything
I make is so good....so much love poured into it...
Back to gardening... Sumo joined us for a bit.....until both he and Monchat slipped under the fence...
into our neighbouring yard..Another 2 hours was spent placing new lumber on the bottom all around the entire yard... They are both grounded for the rest of the week lol.

Monchat was not at all happy when the whole yard had no more escape routes....

Sumo claims this hoe....Monchat realizes he cannot win, even though he outweighs him by a 1 and 1/2 pounds...

3 other gardens that took another day of digging and turning soil and planting new perenials and annuals all in white....as they blossom, will revisit....

This is just the work of 4 days...and OUR sweet Robin above finally left the nest...it was so hot for him in the metal heating vent, that we think Mama Robin pushed him out of the nest yesterday...
They are still around under the lilac bush...the wee Robin, is just not ready to fly just yet....we have been staying in these past couple of days to keep their stress down...

However Sumo just cries at the window... how sad does this look?

WE are in need of a downpour and according to the weather network it will be
here in a day or two....I look forward to sharing more gardening pics
as everything comes in bloom..

In the meantime, this body is in need of rest and I will be sewing some gingham
treats and a new stool...still waiting for Cori to finish hers so I can show
you all my first one...now I am onto the second..wink...

Cheerio...

  1. Your garden is looking great. I know why you lost the kitties-----they are WHITE---just like your plants! Ok, just kidding. Rest up. If you get all that rain, it will be weeding time again all too soon.

    1. HI Ev, thanks for the R. and LofV.....so nice..just got in, had to go to an appt ....just returned....had the post ready to post..guess it did without me...and yes them being white in an all white garden is pretty silly on our part..they just blend with everything lol. I don't think any weeds will be able to get through...we have a lot of mulch out there...x

  3. Samm, loooove looking at your gardens! And of course hearing that the teenagers are grounded cracked me up :D
This year for the first time we hired professionals to clean up our beds and lay mulch. I've never spent money wiser in my life! So nice now to plant and fuss- last year was a complete nightmare and we decided on hiring. We both love gardening and there's plenty to do. I noticed our plants look healthier too. I think this company uses better mulch than we were buying. I'm going to have zillions of zinnias this year! I planted lots of seeds inside- love it all!
But of course no matter what you post I love the Riot Boys most
    xx

    1. You make me chuckle Sue....yes those Riot boys are funny and testy and very much BOYS with all that entails...they have been in and they both have been pretty quiet...possibly realizing they were bad boys....I think next year we will hire our landscapers back...4 days averaging 8 hours per day was pretty silly on our part .....we are getting too old for this lol.

  4. Your yard is looking beautiful! We have also been doing yard work while tile layers are busy in our new downstairs bathrooms. The humidity here has been really high the last week or so, so yard work is HARD!
You've earned a rest and a piece of pie! Enjoy!

    1. HI Linda...it will be even prettier next week....peonies and daisies and cosmos will soon be in bloom ...a humidity would have killed us...we were lucky it was cool, but the sun was beaming down and with a gated yard, very little air flow...pies are all gone....that was our reward for all that exercise, I mean gardening.....take it easy out there...

  5. Your garden looks great! I have blooms on my hydrangeas for the first time this year and am so enjoying them. I saw a mama deer this morning with a very small fawn on none too steady legs. So cute.

  6. Hi Samm, everyone else commented on the gardens first, but I'm going straight for those glorious looking pies! Yumm. OK, now I'm ready for the beautiful white gardens and those lovely boys. I'm feeling all the aches and pains as well, since we have been working outside for a few days. We have a pair of chickadees that have nested in one of the bird houses hanging on the deck and they are so busy feeding their chicks, back and forth all day long. They don't even mind when we sit at the table directly in front of their nest. Nothing stops the constant bringing of food for their little ones. I told Stan that they are one set of parents who will be happy when their brood is ready to leave the nest. I don't know how they keep up the pace.....just another indication of why motherhood is for the young, only in this case, daddy is just as
busy. I read that when they leave the nest after a little over 2 weeks, they are the size of the parents. I hope we are around to see them take flight for the first time. Mom and dad will probably drop from exhaustion. lol Hugs to you both.

    1. Hello Sylvia, I was surprised too lol but then again we worked so hard, we felt a couple pies over 4 days was a really sweet reward, how could anyone not see those pies lol ....and this weekend the garden will be in full bloom, especially if some rain blesses us all.. Oh chickadees are so darling..and yes much like Robins they are constantly feeding them... it is a very tasking job...I watched them for a few hours the other day before our little one may have been pushed out of the nest ... hugs to you as well....be careful not to do too muchx

  7. GREEN with ENVY! I would come and pull all your weeds, just to spend time in a garden with that much space, beauty and sunshine. Sure your little guys don't pull weeds but they enjoy that space as much as I.

Wish mine looked they good or even half that good. I am having to rethink everything after losing so many trees to the drought. Naughty Riot boys, you deserve to be grounded. LOL

Jerry mulched my two herb beds last week but then he had to go out of town so he didn't get to finish the other beds. I love the way the beds look when freshly mulched. :) blessings, marlene
