Day 10 of Books for Women by Women - Tamara Duricka Johnson

We will be featuring Tamara twice, as I ( Mdm Samm)  did my review on this book....I loved her story....She is witty, bright and shared some upbeat moments...

31 Dates in 31 Days

(excerpt from pg. 147)

My reactions to men were out of balance. Either I would feel like I had full control of my dating life by rejecting or accepting a man, or I would feel powerless, as if I were lucky to have some poor sap show me any attention.
However, I’m beginning to form a better attitude about dating, which means finding that middle ground between having control and letting go. While it’s good for me to have a general idea of what I want in a partner, there’s much to be said for
being open to other options. I need to assess guys who come my way based on who they are—not on my expectations—and accept that the next guy won’t be my last chance. That attitude will make it easier for me to choose whether I want to invest
my time.
I wasn’t quite sure how seriously guys would take my project before it began. I wasn’t sure if anyone would find it worth his time or effort. And granted, lots of guys have turned me down, saying first dates are difficult enough. Why would they want to put themselves out there for every other girl to judge them?
But then there are the guys who not only seem really interested in being part of the project, but also want to plan our date, pay for it, and do their best to impress me. I’ve been humbled and surprised by how kind all of the guys have been so far. Is this how men really function? Could guys really be more selfless and emotional than I’ve been giving them credit for my whole life? They don’t really go out of their way for women like this. Do they?

Way to go Tamara....we will have to connect....

Day 9 of Books for Women by Women - Carol Quinn

Good Morning Carol and Carol....
Carol our cheerleader ( just let me quilt)  who dove into bowls with borders
and will be cheering Nancy Drew is a clue in March
did her review on Carol Quinn's book...

"FOLLOW MY LEAD"
The title and cover lures us into believing it is just a book about training dogs, but it turns out to be wonderfully so much more. The author, Carol Quinn, takes us down the path of her life changing experience while attending a dog agility training class with her two Rhodesian ridgebacks, Nairobi and Sheila. Her dogs have definite strong personalities, including some aggressiveness, which made her search for ways to teach them appropriate behavior. As Carol works with them on the agility field and at home, she notices something about their behavior and reactions. She compares this to her own relationships and life, finding ways to make positive changes. She's very candid and open about her weaknesses and insights, which helps to relate to her experiences.
The agility teacher, Irina, though skilled and obviously intelligent, is quite abrasive and would send most people running out of her class at her first biting remark. As it turns out, her influence proves to be what helps Carol focus on making changes in her dogs’ actions as well as in her own personal life. Irina does add some humor to the book by her remark: “Don’t like dogs barking? Get a cat.”
By slowly making changes in her life based on what she was learning, Carol found that “Setting a finite amount of time for each task gave me a sense of a beginning and an end. It relived stress and allowed me to accomplish more and to receive satisfaction when a work segment was completed.” (Reading this paragraph is a great example of what Madame Samm has been telling us about using a timer.)
Carol has several “light bulb” moments about her dogs’ actions and how they relate to her life. “Dogs don’t bring negative emotions into a situation. If they don’t like something, they simply won’t do it.” How often are we thrown into saying “Yes” to something we don’t want to do and then we’re miserable?  Ah, to be a dog and only do what we like to do.
This book was a totally enjoyable read and gives a lot of moments that should make one think about their own life and relationships. Even those people who aren’t pet owners could relate to this book’s view on dealing with others. Pet owners will relate to her stories with laughter and sometimes heartbreaking connections to their own pets.

“Dogs could care less about the future. They want to have fun now.”
Fabulous review Carol and Carol your book is a must have for any dog lovers..which would be all of us...lol

Day 8 of Books for Women by Women - Bree Housley

Good Morning Bree, thank you for being here this morning
and answering all these wonderful questions about your adventure...

Q&A with Bree Housley, Author of We Hope You Like This Song

1.    What inspired you and your sister to embark on your yearlong tribute to Shelly and then to go on to write We Hope You Like This Song?

What inspired us to begin the yearlong tribute to Shelly was pretty random. I was having a not-so-intellectual conversation with my friends, Ami and Kerry, at the bar shortly after New Year’s Day in 2009.  We were discussing the ridiculousness of New Year’s resolutions and how no one ever sticks to them. This led us to talk about things we could maybe do for a week, but not a whole year.  Then we moved on as you do with most bar conversations.  However, unlike most bar conversations, I couldn’t forget about it.  I kept replaying it in my head.  It reminded me a lot of Shelly’s way of life.  She would do anything on any given day. So on a whim; I decided to try it.  I emailed my sister to see if she thought it was stupid…because I was pretty sure it was probably stupid. Courtnee not only liked the idea, she asked if she could join me. We decided at that point to keep track of our “project” via blog.  If she hadn’t come along on the adventure, I’m not sure I would’ve gotten through the year!
As for the book, I always knew I wanted to tell the story of my friendship with Shelly, but it was just too sad.  I didn’t want to write a sob story about how I lost my best friend.  However, once the blog project got going, I found myself opening up about Shelly in ways I never had before. I was basically going through a happy version of therapy.  The kind where you don’t have to sit face-to-face and talk to a stranger who just keeps repeating “…and how does that make you feel?”  The blog project gave me closure. It was the happy ending I yearned for. I couldn’t wait to put those words on a page and share our story with others.

2.    What experience had the most profound effect on you during your Shelly-inspired year?

Well, there were quite a few “resolutions” that taught me valuable lessons, even if I humiliated myself in the process.  In fact, Karaoke is a big example of that.  I was scared to death to do it, but when I found my inner Shelly and butchered an old Christmas tune in front of a bunch of strangers, it quickly became one of my favorite experiences.  I learned that living life out loud (and out of tune) is more rewarding than sitting in the corner humming along.  But to answer the question, the blog itself had the most profound experience on me. I learned that opening up to people, whether they’re strangers, friends, or acquaintances, opens up your mind in so many ways.  Court and I have always been introverts, so living the live of an extrovert for a year was rather enlightening. And also terrifying.

3.    The title of this book is We Hope You Like This Song. What significance does music have to your relationship and memories with Shelly?

So much.  One of our oldest and dearest memories was the first time we truly bonded in fourth grade.  We were waiting for our dads to finish talking after a chorus concert and before we knew it, we were skipping to the drinking fountain together singing, “We’re going to get a drink, a drink, a drink.  We’re going to get a drink and we hope you like this song.”  We never forgot that song and still busted it out randomly throughout the years.
We also made each other mixtapes. Much like people who are dating.  We had so many special songs.  Memories flood my mind when I hear any one of them on the radio. I still have the last mixtape she made for me when I moved across the country after college.  She gave me a note with it that explained why each song was chosen. This is the one time my packrat ways proved to be beneficial.  I will always treasure it.

Thank you Bree, you no doubt have wisdom beyond your years!
