I recently dropped one of those narrow and tall olive oil bottles. It was pretty traumatic. I had just filled up the bottle all the way to the top the night before I knocked it over. The bottle shattered into a million tiny pieces and the olive oil was all over my nice jeans, counter top, white cabinet door, hardwood floor and an ugly black floor mat ($8 from Home Depot!). I used almost an entire roll of paper towel to clean up this mess. Needless to say, I tossed out the floor mat with olive oil all over it and was convinced that it was time to make a nice quilt for us to step on! *sarcasm*
I have been eying Robert Kaufman's Treasures & Tidbits collection and knew this would make the perfect floor mat. I selected seven green and orange fabrics to match my kitchen. What do you think!?
Ah! Go ahead! Go step on your quilt; it feels amazing!
MATERIALS:
- Seven different 1/8 yard cut of fabrics for the top
- About one yard of fabric for the back
- About 1/3 yard of fabric as binding
- Fleece
- Non-slip drawer lining to go under the mat so it won't slip
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Prewash all fabrics. This is a must if you want to machine wash this floor mat!
2. Cut the 1/8 yard of fabrics into thirty-five 5.5" x 5.5" squares.
3. Assemble the 5.5" x 5.5" squares into a quilt, with 1/4" seam allowance, that measures 35" x 30" when finished (seven squares across and five squares down).
4. Quilt them using fleece as it holds up better than cotton.
5. Before you bind this off, create four corners so you can tuck the "non-slip" drawer lining into each corner. This will allow me to remove the liner when this mat needs to be washed.
6. Bind off, and that's it! I used a 2" strip for the binding; I wish I made it a bit wider. I think I will use 2.5" to 3" strip next time.
I cut up two pieces of non-slip drawer liners and taped them together. They work so well!
Happiness is stepping on my beautiful quilt and looking at it every time I walk by my kitchen!
Yes, it's official. My husband thinks I am crazy for spending the time and money on this. But he agrees that this looks fantastic in our kitchen. Now he wants to me to make matching chair cushions, placemats, potholders, etc. I know how I plan to use up my scrap fabrics from this collection!

I used a bath towel that my husband had accidentally bleached (it WAS navy) when I made mine for the bathroom a few years ago. The towel gives it some absorbancy but we love the look of the quilt on the floor.
ReplyDeleteYours is gorgeous. Nice job.
HI Susan! Fabulous tutorial--I've seen floor mats before but they required art supplies like canvas and gesso...this is so much more manageable. I love your color combo--that blue has just the right contrast-pop factor.
ReplyDeleteGreat project and love the tip on the shelf liner for non skid that can be removed for washing. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteNever thought about this before! thanks.

Great idea and great tutorial. I think that I might give this a try and if it doesn't do well, I won't mind stepping on it! Good practice for a beginner quilter... me.

This is Beautifull !! Could I make me !!!! Walk on it !!! ?
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful floor mat. I want to make one for my kitchen. Thanks for sharing....Judith, Texas
ReplyDeleteThanks for the drawer liner tip. I have made two bathmats and hubby is always complaining they move around the floor... now I know what to do. Hugs
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Love it.
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous and just what my home needs! Thanks for the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tutorial - good project for a beginner like myself! thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove your colour combinations and now it has sparked an idea off for me for my kitchen window.
ReplyDeleteI love it. It is a fabulous idea and its on my to do list soon. Thanks for the inspired idea. x
ReplyDeleteI have wanted to make a rug quilt but was a little cautious as my family might think I went off the deep end. Well, now I am going to make a rug. Thanks for the inspiration and the tutorial. Love the quilt rug.
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific way to coordinate a kitchen, rug, chair covers, and placemats all matching.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the corner idea for the non slip drawer liner. I've used drawer liner for rugs for years, but never thought of the corners to help keep it all together.
Thanks for sharing.
What a great idea! I will definitely need to make one of these (or two...the bathroom will need one as well)!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute, I guess I will have to be brave and walk my quilt on my quilt. Maybe I would want to cook more, do you think?
ReplyDeleteI love it, that is the color of my kitchen too!
ReplyDeleteGreat tip on the drawer liner for non-slip! Thanks for a super tutorial!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a floor mat done like that....excellent idea! Thanks for the tutorial...and I love the bright colors in your kitchen.
ReplyDeleteSmiles,
Kelly
What a great idea! Very creative and so practical! Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou must be a couple who removes your shoes indoors. This wouldn't last very long in my house. But it sure looks great.
ReplyDeleteLove the floormat but I'm like Annie, it wouldn't last one day in my house! You both must not walk in shoes inside your house!!! I have to use those vinyl cushioned mats so I can wipe or mop them off. This Gmama's farmhouse would LOVE to have something like that but I don't have the lifestyle to support it. Hooray to those who do!! But I really like the shelf lining idea. That would be good in other areas.

Thanks for a wonderful idea. I will have to work on being able to walk on a quilt floor mat but I love the look. Maybe a floor mat for my grandkids to play on first since we have tile floors. Again thanks for sharing and love your blog.
ReplyDeleteLove this tutorial! Very pretty and practical. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea!! And yours looks so wonderful with the matching kitchen towels! Now that is living with quilts - I must try this!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea!!! TFS

Oh my goodness I LOVE this! The colours are gorgeous! This is such great timing, I made a rug for the kitchen floor (to hide a hole in the flooring!!) but it's tough to wash and doesn't look great. I'll totally be following this tutorial, such a brilliant idea :)
ReplyDeleteLooks great! The colours are perfect for any kitchen! This is a great pattern for a quilt too =D
ReplyDeletewhat a great idea to use the drawer liner for the non skid backing - so much easier!
ReplyDeleteLove this!!! I actually use a quilt as a rug in my daughter's room and it's so much softer under foot than the yucky old carpet. I never thought to do it in the kitchen, but what a perfect solution for my space. I'll be going home and getting started ASAP! :)
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. I will be making one for the kitchen and bathroom.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the easy to follow tutorial.
I want to make one for myself too!
ReplyDelete:D
Thank you! I am in love with this mat!! It is on my must make list.
ReplyDeleteThis is fabulous! *writing this down on my to-do list*
ReplyDeleteHi Madame!! Thanks for having me here today. Such a pleasure to meet everyone here!! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Looks neat and adds so much color. I love it and want to try this. Thanks for a super tutorial.
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing this idea; I may have to make a mat to match my shower curtain.
ReplyDeleteLove the beautiful kitchen mat, Susan. I looks gorgeous in your kitchen. I like the clever way you used the anti slip material to keep it in place on the floor. Thanks so much for sharing your tutorial with us!
ReplyDeleteLove the kitchen mat but it looks to prety to get all dirty with grease & crumbs ...at least in our house it would ! It might be a good reason to give up cooking ! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm totally in love with this idea! Because I'm "older" I'm very afraid of falling if my rug slips - have you found that this really stays put? I'd love to make one! blessings, marlene
ReplyDeleteI don't think I could actually step on it! It's too pretty. Great tutorial though-I love the corner pockets to hold the anti-slip mat. That's genius!
ReplyDeleteFantastic idea. Love it. Something different to add to my holiday gift giving items, especially with the other matching kitchen items such as placemats, etc. Can even make up holiday floor mats too, which can be easily changed with the backing that you used on this one.
ReplyDeleteI also love how it looks, great idea BUT ... too pretty to step on, LOL.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, it is giving me ideas!
warm quilt hugs, sue in CA
LOVE this. Thank you for sharing the tutorial, and your lessons learned.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea, and my first thoughts are to make them for lots of other places besides the kithcen. My only concern is the drawer liner on hardwood. Is it likely to cause discoloration or other damage?
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely fantastic. Could not have come at a better time because I was going to look for new rugs for my kitchen next weekend. Now I have an excuse to buy more fabric. My guest bathroom could also use a facelift.
