Guest #32 with Linda ( Canada) and her Rainbow by The Sea giveaway LIMITED EDITION Quilt ART

Hello from Nova Scotia, Canada!  This is Linda from ScrapMaster. Thank you Madame Samm!  I would love to tell everyone about "My Bottled Rainbows" quilt pictured above.

I am not new to quilting, so of course I have boxes and bags and totes full of scraps.  I love my scraps. So, when I saw the ticker-tape quilt-along that Rachel from Stitched in Color was hosting, I knew it would be a perfect project for my scraps. I was also able to use up scrap pieces of batting. A perfect Scrapbuster quilt!

Here is how I made my block, and then from there you can make all the blocks you need to complete your quilt. I kept with Rachel's colour plan mostly. I have a huge bin of solid coloured fabric and was glad to be able to use some of it.  I did not buy any fabric to make this quilt top.  I did buy the backing fabric..it was such a good buy.

Back View
First, you will need to gather all the different coloured  solids that you will need to make the frames. And then, choose the same colour-family scraps to match the frames.

Then choose a background fabric, I used a solid white. Cut a rectangle measuring 11 1/2" x 15 1/2"

Next, cut batting pieces to measure a bit larger than 17" x 21"

For the block border strips( solid colour) cut:
  2 - 3" x 15 1/2" strips
  2 - 3" x 16 1/2" strips

Now sew the 15 1/2" solid colour strips to each 15 1/2" side of the background rectangle. Press, then add the 16 1/2" strips to the remaining sides.

Next step is to layer your batting piece and your block. I lightly spray-basted these together, I just find it easier than pinning or hand basting. You will be appliqueing the little scraps in a quilt-as-you-go technique and adding the backing in one whole piece when all the blocks are sewn together.

Now the fun begins!!   Take all your lovely little scraps and place them where you think they look best and then trim them to fit, leaving a space between each one so the background peeks through. I didn't measure, I just eye-balled that space.  I used my rotary cutter with the pinking blade to trim each little scrap to fit.  Then when you have it all arranged to your satisfaction, you can then add a few dabs of glue to keep them in place.
Now it's time to stitch around each little scrap.  I used a short zigzag stitch. Even though I pinked the edges, I will still get a bit of fraying, which I like.

My favourite

Now, square up your block to measure 16 1/2"x 20 1/2".   So, now you can continue on and make all the blocks required to complete your own Bottled Rainbows quilt.

After all the blocks are together in a top, just add backing and then you are ready to quilt.  For quilting I did in-the- ditch around the white background rectangle and then straight line quilting in the frame.  I couldn't decide what colour thread to use so I took the extra time required and used matching thread for each block.

In the bobbin, I used mostly different shades of blue threads. They all blended in very nicely.  I achieved the result I wanted.  This was the most fun project I have ever made.  I would do it again.  This is the first time I have ever described how I made a quilt so I hope you got the idea and you can also visit Rachel's blog and check out her much more detailed instructions.  There is also a Flickr! group with some awesome examples of other quilters' Bottled Rainbows quilt.  If you are wondering why this quilt is called Bottled Rainbows, it is because Rachel keeps her same colour-family scraps in bottles on display.

A closer view of the rainbow binding

Here is a quick project I made to show you other ways you can use the ticker-tape method.
I traced around  my dinner-plate to measure the centre circle on muslin and then filled in around the circle with scraps.  I better get busy. I still have 5 more to make!

I hope you enjoyed reading about my experience with making this awesome quilt. And, to all you wonderful beginner quilters, save all your scraps and leftovers and you can use them in the future to make a great quilt like I did.  It really is great fun and I would do it again. I hope you will give it a try.  Thanks again, Madame Samm.
Editors note: this is sew lovely Karen...your colors are certainly that of a rainbow..I would call this a happy quilt, cause that is what it evokes...

Guest # 31 Mark with a calyso swing Flower Arrangement and Giveaway from Free Spirit

Hello everyone my name is Mark Cesarik and I am a designer with
Free Spirit-fabrics.
Madame Samm asked me to show you today how to make
this flower arrangement.   Simple, quick and easy!
Great for you Wantobes and Quilters alike...

Sometimes simple things can make exotic creations.
I am sure many of you have a bit of stash that you could
make your own unique flower arrangement.
Here is what you will need.

 Materials Needed:

1 yard of your chosen fabric
1 yard of contrast
Needle
Thread
4 " styrofoam ball
* white better but you can get them green as well
Vase that will fit your ball into nicely
lot's of pins...

1 Cut each yard of fabric in half lengthwise so that you have 4 pieces that are 21” by 36”.

2 Cut strips that are 4” wide and 21” long. You should end up with 36 strips.

3 Fold strip in half wrong sides facing so that you have a strip that is 2” wide by 21” long.

4 Tuck ends inside so that the seams are finished.

5 Baste stitch ¼” from the bottom. Make about 2 - 3 stitches per inch.

5 Baste stitch ¼” from the bottom. Make about 2 - 3 stitches per inch.

6 Gather the fabric by pushing the fabric towards the knotted end. The fabric will form into a
rolled shape.

7 Starting at one end, roll into a tight flower shape, slipping stitching the layers as you go.

8 Once all flowers are finished, place Styrofoam ball into the vase. Add flowers to theStyrofoam ball starting at the bottom. Use pins to secure the flowers to the ball.

I got my start in 2007 when my wife Cara and I started Sew Bettie, which we were able to do when we discovered Spoonflower. One of our most popular designs was the Mustache Fabric. In 2009 I signed with Westminster and I launched my first collection in the Winter of 2011, which was Calypso Swing. Morning Tides was released in August and "Cosmic Burst" will come out 1st quarter 2012.

My wife Cara is the sewer and crafter side o fmy fabric design endeavors, my background is in fine art and design and I do have a day job as a graphic designer, - I hope one day to be able to do this full time.
