Guest # 17 with Karen from Australia, - Orange you glad it is RED

I am RED, RED, READY for my turn to guest post on Sew We Quilt . And what a delight it is to be here during the Wantobe Quilters Campaign!
Thank you so much to Madame Samm for the invitation.  Sew exciting!
HI! My name is Karen and I like to play over at Sunburnt Quilts.
Madame Samm suggested that  I might like to share my RED quilt. I think M. Samm has quite a passion for RED too.
My quilt really started as several small niggling ideas and  gradually grew into a bed sized quilt. I had collected some red and white fabrics and also wanted to make a medallion quilt as well as play with borders.
And so this bundle of fabric changed from this.......

To this...........

This quilt is far from perfect but I have learnt so much in the process. And have tried many new techniques thanks to my LQS.
I had no particular plan in mind when I started, so I really just want to show you how it grew. When it is broken down into its smaller parts it is nowhere near as complex as it first looks. It has ended up being 70 x 70 inches.
I started with the medallion for the centre. This is a version of the Rose of Sharon design. I used needle turn to appliqué the pieces to the block. I had only done needle turn on small pieces prior to this so it was quite daunting.

I felt this needed to be framed so added a border using flying geese and then a small width of striped fabric.
I had reached this point and was starting to think of borders but felt it was a little ordinary. Then I had the idea that it could sit en pointe. I had no idea how to do that but was determined to use my maths skills to work out the size of the triangles.  I must admit to being a little surprised as to how large this made the centre when I sewed them on. It was then that I also realised what a lot of big empty spaces I had created. That's where the Dresden fan came to mind and I used one in each corner.

And so the centre sat en pointe, fans were in the corners and a thin red border was added to frame it.

Now came the time for a few borders. I had really been careful with my maths calculations because I wanted to use 6 inch stars in the first border.  Thankfully all went to plan and they fitted in as they should. I was able to use most of my fabrics in the stars. I left out the one with the thin red circles as there was not enough red in it to define the star shape.

And so the next border grew and was also framed in red (shadow-play).

After using the sharp angles in the stars, the plan was to use the curved shapes of the Drunkard's Path in a border.  I had also wanted some plain borders just using the fabric as the feature. The maths of the quilt determined what came next. I had to work out the size of the DP and how to turn each corner before I could make the plain fabric borders.
More calculations and some inappropriate language and the design came together. I simply used two fabrics in the border broken by a thin strip of stripes, then framed again in the red shadow-play.

Then it was on to the Drunkard's Path marathon. I ended up making over 180 individual blocks so I had a few spares to swap around. These were each made at 3 1/2 inches so that when combined in a four patch they were a 6 1/2 inch block.
Stacks.

And stacks.

Then strips.

And more strips.

Finally the last borders went on and linked with each corner (thankfully).

So now my quilt is at the point where I need to make the sandwich and decide on the quilting. I am even still trying to decide if I will do it myself or send it out to someone who has a long-arm machine. No rush as I have taken a while to get to this point, a little longer will not be a problem.

I love seeing it draped over the bed with the sun streaming in the window.

Along the way there were some hiccups. At one stage I was busy making the star blocks and picked up the wrong white fabric. I merrily sewed 10 of them before I realised my mistake. Not being one to waste something, I turned them into a small quilt for the table.

I also used the left over Drunkard's Path blocks in a small mat.

And you can see that my passion for red is not just limited to this quilt!

I  will stop with the red photos there (although there can never really ever be enough red!).
Thank you for indulging my passion for red. And I hope that a few quilters may be encouraged to have a go at a medallion quilt of their own.
Please visit me at Sunburnt Quilts and tell me about your medallion quilts or the quilts you have made in red. In fact, I'd love to see what you have made in any colour!! I'd love to visit and see your work.
Thank you once again, Madame Samm, for kindly asking me to be here for a guest post.
Cheers, Karen.

  115. I have followed and gotten to know Karen for a year now. She is quite the gal. I can definately identify with anyone who uses inappropriate language, from time to time in quilting. Haven't most us been there... :-) The end results of her project are pretty darn spectacular and well worth any language it took to get there! :-)
I love red and white, but have done little quilting with them, but with this inspiration, that is definately going to have to change. As for me Purple and lime green are my favorite colors. Must be that old age thing they keep telling me I am rapidly approaching! But I don't believe em one bit! Thanks Karen for a wonderful post and thanks M Samm for a great campaign. I am loving it every day!

  182. I'm now a follower at Karen's blog. It sure looks like a fun place. I love the red and white and would love to have red and white in my world, but... I have a little brown very, very hairy dog. His hair hangs off every thing!!!! In fact I've always had very hairy dogs and have always had to imagine decor with hair. red and white loses a lot with bunches of apricot (that's what color he sheds) hair! So I admire red and white at a distance! I still like teal and purple. It seems to do okay hairy.

  188. I LOVE red and white quilts!! I have a stash of R&W fabrics waiting to be turned into a positive/negative R&W Monkey Wrench quilt that will be sent to one of our (injured) Canadian troops. The backing has red maple leaves on a white background - quite appropriate, don't you think?
I've signed up to follow Karen's blog, and will be checking it out in more depth shortly. I already signed up to follow your's a few weeks ago. My sponsor is A Quilting Sheep. And in answer to your 2nd question, this quilt would be striking done up in black and white, or more soothing in pink and brown, or turquoise and brown....

  189. I've been following you. Now I'm also following Karen. The uber talented Karne. OMG! How talented. My favorite colors, though? It changes with the wind. So I can't really say I have a favorite. Red scares me because I'm deathly afraid it will fade/run to the other color(s) used with it. Thankfully I'm a fairly new quilter, so I don't have a lot of fabrics to choose from. So sorry, no pat answer to this question for me. It depends on what I'm working on, and what kind of mood I'm in that day.

  193. I just became a follower of Karen's blog. She has lots of really wonderful ideas! Of course I'm a follower here and I do love red and white, cherry red to be precise.
My other favorite combo is turquoise and white OR a tie would be a mix of all brights and white, that's probably my first choice because you could put plenty of turquoise in there with orange, red, aqua, and all of those bright and cheery colored fat quarters I've been saving for a white and multi-colored quilt someday. It's going to be an Irish Chain. I love the Irish Chain and the Drunkards path set in squares. That one will maybe be the cherry red and white :) at some point, after the Irish Chain.
