#8 Guest at Wantobe Quilters- its Em with "It's Cinch Backpack"

Hi It's Em, from Emscrapbag and I'm delighted to be posting here again on Sew We Quilt.  With summer winding down and school around the corner I though I would share a tute for a fun and easy backpack.  So easy in fact that three of my four children have made them.  Here is DD modeling the one she made.
You will need:  1/2 yard of fabric, 4 yards of cording, 2 grommets, and a grommet tool.  First cut your fabric into a 15" x 36" rectangle.
Fold this in half along the 36" side so that wrong sides are together.  Sew 1/4" from top to bottom of fold.  Do this on both sides.
Trim your seems to 1/8".  I pinked mine but it is not necessary.
Turn so right sides are together and press seem.
Now sew 3/8" from top to bottom of fold.
Now you have a nice finished French seem.  No unraveling happening here.
Along top fold fabric down 1/4" and press. Where your seem is just press to one side.  But make sure your seems are going the same direction this helps when threading your cording later.  So let one face the back of the backpack and the other the front.
Next fold down another 1" and press.  Just below this press line  and next to the seem make a 3/4" button hole.  .
 Repeat on other side
Now fold down the 1" that you pressed and stitch it in place to make casing.
Following your grommet tool's directions place grommets in lower corners.
Cut your cording into 2- 62" pieces.  Using a safety pin thread one piece of cording through one button hole, go all the way around the casing and pull out the same button hole.  Repeat with other button hole and cording piece.
Bring ends of cording from one button hole together.  Thread through grommet and tie together to secure.  Repeat with other cording ends and grommet hole.
Wha la you just finished this fun back pack.  Wasn't that a cinch?

Editors note:

Well Em perfect timing for all the buglets who are going off
to school...let's provide them with some new notions-shall we?

  111. Wow. You certainly have awesome sponsors! I had to chuckle when I read the list and came across the finger protectors. I wonder if Colonial Needle has an extensive protector selection since I have this innate ability to drop 5 pins and but can only find 4 of them with my feet and toes. Thanks for this program. Thanks for the tutorial. Thanks to your sponsors. I'm hosted by the lovely Linda at Stray Stitches.
