Guest #20 Amy Bradley...let's get to the bottom of this !

When Madame Samm calls you- you  pick up that phone. At least I do. and when she said, you need to be here, I listen. I sit myself down in my very own tush cush and I listen.  Thank you Madame Samm.

Hello! Let me introduce myself, I am Amy Bradley and I have been quilting for about twenty-five years now and designing quilts for about nine years. I have a background in art and graphic design so I like to draw funny sewing ladies and whimsical characters and turn them into the best art form ever - quilts! My best-selling quilt pattern I have designed is the Quilt Diva,

boy she sure is ugly but quilters love her anyway. Lately, I have been doing fun little sewing projects for the sewing room. I'm coming out with a funny lady pin cushion pattern soon. So I decided to do a cushion for the sewing room and give it away as a free pattern to you! These instructions are basic fusible applique which is how I make the majority of my quilts. Please let me know if anyone has questions, I am always happy to help.
Hope you enjoy it!
Amy
p.s. A big thank you to Madame Samm for this wonderful blog to inspire and entertain us!

I am here today to introduce you all to a TUSH CUSH.
Madame Samm and I laughed a lot about this one.
We all have tushes, and they need some cushing, so let
me do a tutorial for you today...Hope you enjoy it as much
as I enjoyed making it for you.

Before starting
Print full size patterns & Print full size placement sheets

MATERIAL LIST:
Yardage based on 44” width.

4 ½” x 7 ½” Each of Eight Different Backgrounds
7/8 yd. Black Fabric
14 3/4" x 30 ½" Quilt Batting

½ yd 12” width Lite Steam-a-Seam 2®

Black all-purpose thread

BLACK FABRIC:

BORDERS: Cut two 2 1/4” strips. Trim one strip into two 13" pieces. Trim the other strip into two 17" pieces.

SASHING: Cut two 1” strips. Trim one strip into six 6 1/2" pieces. Trim the other strip into one 13 1/2" piece.

CHAIR TIES: Cut two 2” strips. Trim each strip into two 21" pieces for a total of four.

CUSHION BACK: Cut one 16 1/2” strip. Next, open the strip and trim into one 17" piece.

CHOOSE EIGHT DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS:
Trim each fabric into one 4 ½” x 7 ½” piece.

All seams are 1/4” unless otherwise specified. Place right sides together and pin prior to sewing.

1.Trace Letters on Fusible Web
Use patterns (not the placement sheets) and a pencil to trace the letters onto fusible web leaving 1/4” between pieces.

2. Press Fusible Web Pieces to Fabric
Do not cut on the pencil line. Cut fusible web around the letters leaving at least 1/8” from the outside of the pencil line. Place the fusible letters on the back of the black fabric. Press according to fusible web instructions. Let cool.

3. Cut Letters Out on the Pencil Line
Use scissors to cut letters out on the pencil line.

4. Place Pattern Pieces on Letter Backgrounds
On a light table, place a placement sheet right side up. Align and center
4 ½” x 7 ½” letter backgrounds right side up over each letter background on the placement sheet. There should be approximately 1/2" around each side. Remove paper backing from fusible web and place letters on each background using placement sheet as a guide. Transport each background to ironing board. Press following fusible web instructions. Let cool.

5. Buttonhole Stitch All Letters
Buttonhole stitch or satin stitch around all letters.

6. Trim Letter Backgrounds
Align each stitched letter background over each letter on the placement sheet and mark trim line of 3 3/8” x 6 ½” on all four corners lightly with a mechanical or white pencil. Place letter background on cutting mat, double check that measurements are 3 7/8” x 6 ½”. Square and trim using a rotary cutter and a ruler.

7. Assemble Rows
Sew a 1” x 6 ½” sashing piece to the right side of letter backgrounds t, c, both u and s backgrounds. Press seams towards sashing. Then sew the letter backgrounds with sashing together to form the tush row and the cush row. Press seams toward sashing.

8. Assemble Cushion Top
Sew a 1” x 13 ½” sashing piece to the bottom of the tush row. Press seams towards sashing. Pin and sew both rows together. Press seams toward sashing.

9. Add the Outside Border
Sew the two 2 1/4” x 13” strips to the sides of the cushion top. Sew the two 2 1/4” x 17” strips to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press seams towards borders. Final cushion top size is 16 ½” x 17”.

10. Chair Ties
Fold one end 1/2" down on the short end of one of the 2" x 21" strips. Fold in half right sides together lengthwise the 2" x 21" strip and press. Fold the outside long edges to meet the center fold again and press. Pin and stitch 1/16" from the sides where the folds meet. Press.

11. Assembling Cushion
Place the cushion top and the cushion back right sides together. Sew around both sides and bottom leaving the top open next to the tush row. Trim bottom corners close to stitching. Turn inside out and press. Fold the top edge down 1/4" to the inside of the opening and press.

12. Quilt Batting
Cut a piece of 1/4" thick quilt batting 14 3/4" x 30 1/2". Fold in half and insert it into the cushion opening fold first and smooth it out flat. Put pins in several places on the letter background to keep batting from moving.

13. Adding Chair Ties
Insert two chair ties 1/2" down raw edge ends down first on top of each other to both corners and pin. Pin the opening close. Top stitch 1/8" along the opening edge and continue all around the other three sides reverse stitching where the ties are inserted for extra security.

14. Quilting
A walking foot is great for this step. I stitched 1/8" around the inside of the border and also through the center of each sashing strip.

  141. Oh my gosh, this Tush Cush is something I NEED very badly. I have already printed it all out and will hopefully get to make one soon. My chair is not as 'fluffy' as it used to be and although MY tush IS fluffy, it's also a tender one and after buying two different pillow types of things recently, I still need something. The two I purchased were not cheap and neither work as they make my tushy too high. This tush cush sounds like the perfect thing to help me out. Thank you. LOVE IT!

OH and when I do make mine, it will definitely have lots of purple in it.

Thanks to the sponsors for supplying all the items for the giveaway.
My tush cush would be a combination of all bright colors. My fav color is pink, but I love to combine them all as long as they are bright happy colors. The trim in my sewing room is white, so I was wondering how it would turn out if I used white in place of the black. I have never finished a quilt yet, so I have not learned these things yet. I have yet to work with white at all.
Thanks Madame Samm for giving us yet another chance to win.
